Late goal earns tie, clinches tourney spot for Raiders

LA GRANDE — Southern Oregon clinched a spot in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament Sunday, tying Eastern Oregon 1-1 in double-overtime in the regular-season finale.

Kelli Jones gave Eastern Oregon a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute, scoring off a pass from Mauriana Gonzalez. The Mountaineers held the advantage deep into the second half despite a 26-6 shot advantage for Southern Oregon in the match.

With the Raiders needing a win or a tie to clinch a postseason berth in the CCC Tournament, Julie Zamzow scored in the 87th minute following a pass from Jacquie Galvez. Southern Oregon proceeded to shut out the Mountaineer offense the rest of the way, not allowing a single shot in either of the overtime periods to earn the tie and a spot in the conference tournament.

Katelyn Allen and Kailey Moss played all 110 minutes in goal for the two teams, with each posting identical line scores of one goal allowed and two saves.

Southern Oregon (9-5-2, 5-2-2 CCC) tie for third in the final conference standings with 17 points, and with the tournament's third seed it will travel to Portland for a semifinal match against second-seeded and third-ranked Concordia on Saturday at 7 p.m.
