EAGLE POINT — Eagle Point produced one of its better performances of the season Tuesday, but couldn't slip past Class 5A Southern Oregon Hybrid boys soccer rival Ashland.
Ashland, which defeated the Eagles 5-1 in an earlier meeting this season, used a goal midway through the second half to post a 1-0 victory at Eagle Stadium.
"My boys played up today," said Eagle Point coach Phil Ortega. "We played well in space. We had seven or eight solid opportunities to score. We just couldn't get the ball into the net."
Ashland's Nick Chouard, a junior halfback, broke the scoreless tie with a low shot into the net on a breakaway.
"(Chouard) took it pretty much himself and scored on his own," said Ortega.
Ashland controlled much of the momentum and had a big edge in shots on goal against the Eagles (2-7-2).
"Ashland played very well offensively," said Ortega. "They had great possession on the ball."
Captain David Atteberry and Devon Linville excelled on the Eagles' backline.
"They cleared the ball when needed and kept their cool under pressure," said Ortega.
For Ashland (7-6), senior midfielder Diego Harrison orchestrated the Grizzlies' attack.
"(Harrison) played a very smart game," Ashland coach Brad Roupp said. "He distributed the ball really well and helped us maintain control of possession."
Roupp also had praise for Eagle Point's effort.
"It looks like they're building a program at Eagle Point," said Roupp. "It was a tough win. It will be a challenge to play them in the future."
Ashland's season will continue with a play-in game Saturday. The Grizzlies' opponent and location is yet to be determined.
SHELDON 6, CRATER 0 — At Eugene, Crater senior goalkeeper Omar Mendez recorded 13 saves on 31 shots and the Comets (0-14) held Sheldon scoreless in the first half of the Class 6A state play-in match.
