PORTLAND — The North Medford volleyball team got off to a good start against Westview but couldn't sustain its solid play at Westview High on Wednesday.
The Wildcats topped the Black Tornado 21-25, 25-22, 25-14, 25-13 in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs. Westview will next face top-seeded Jesuit (24-5), which beat Crater.
After picking up the opening game, North rallied from a 24-14 deficit in the second set to cut the Wildcats' lead to two points. But the comeback fell just short.
"We had six points of error-free volleyball," North Medford head coach Erika Wright said.
In the third and fourth sets, Westview (14-10) established a strong middle attack that the Black Tornado had trouble defending.
Senior outside hitter Emily Carlson turned nine kills and six digs and junior outside hitter Katy Carter nine kills and six digs for North (11-9). Senior libero Ashley Smith turned in 20 digs and three aces, senior setter Telsche Munson 29 assists and seven digs and sophomore middle hitter Kathy Martin six kills.
The Black Tornado finished second in the Southern Oregon Hybrid.
"You always hate going out with a loss, but the reality is only eight teams get to go to the state tournament," Wright said. "So we feel proud of what we have done up to this point and, in terms of progress this season, being better as the season went on."
