Two early-morning fires in Medford

The Medford Fire Department is investigating two early-morning fires today in Medford.

The first fire, reported about 6 a.m. at 1110 E. Vilas Road, involved a 30-by-50-foot metal shop that was fully involved when firefighters arrived, according to fire department spokesman Wayne Painter. The structure was a total loss, he said.

Three engines responded to the blaze. Mutual aid was provided by Jackson County Fire District No. 3.

The second fire, reported at 7:03 a.m., was in a vacant house at 3395 Darrell Drive. The fire destroyed about a third of the house, he estimated.

Five engines and two water tenders were deployed to that fire, Painter said. Mutual aid was provided by Jackson County Fire District No. 5.

No injuries were reported in either fire. The estimated financial damage was not available. Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fires, which appear to be unrelated.
