The Latino Scholarship fund celebrates its 10th year with a new special event to raise money for the fund and celebrate the recipients of the fund. The event starts at 6 p.m. at Southern Oregon Brewing Co., 1922 United Way, Medford, and will feature entertainment by the Mariachi Centella band.
The event is free and open to the public. All-you-can eat tacos provided by La Tapatia in Phoenix for $15 will be available. Owner of Southern Oregon Brewing Co., Tom Hammond has pledged to donate $2 for every pint of beer sold.
Since 2003, the Latino Scholarship Fund has given more than $300,000 in scholarships to more than 100 students.
Many recipients of the fund who have gone on to graduate with degrees will be in attendance including La Tapatia owner Jose Bugarin, who was a recipient of the scholarship in 1995, and went on to get his Masters degree in business.
Director of the fund Chela Sanchez says this is the first time the fund has hosted such an event aside form their annual Battle of the Beans, and they hope to reach people who wouldn't normally attend a fundraiser.
Southern Oregon Brewing beers will be on tap, and the Oregon Ducks football game will be shown on the TV screens. Prizes and contests will be held, including a challenge for who can eat the most tacos in 10 minutes.
According to Sanchez, more than 150 applications for scholarships are received each year and in 2013 only eight recipients will be selected.
