  • MURPHY — Although the score was in no way indicative of how the Hidden Valley girls soccer team controlled the game offensively, Courtney Hart needed to bail out the Mustangs in their Class 4A play-in game on Friday.
On a routine drop pass from Central's goalkeeper, Hart made a steal and one-touched the ball right back for the contest's only goal, giving the Mustangs a 1-0 victory at Hidden Valley High.
The Mustangs (11-4) will face an opponent to be determined in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday.
Hart, who made the play of the game by connecting in the far left post from 20 yards out in the 35th minute, made up for the team's 19 unsuccessful shots on goal in the contest.
The Mustang defense, however, more than made up for the offense's lack of success of getting by Central's keeper.
The Mustangs denied Central of getting within 20 yards of Hidden Valley's goal, which essentially gave Mustangs keeper Morgan Hansen the night off as she was never contested in the match.
It was the fifth-straight shutout posted by Mustangs, who finished second in the Skyline Conference to top-ranked Mazama.
NORTH VALLEY 2, CASCADE 1 — At Salem, Vanessa D'Arpino scored goals in the 51st and 56th minutes to launch North Valley into the Class 4A playoffs.
Cascade's Ale Marquez cut North Valley's lead to 2-1 with a goal at the 75-minute mark on a Knights miscue, but it wasn't enough for Cascade which was outshot, 20-3.
North Valley central midfielders Kylie McLeheran, Tishonna Bernacel and Kourtney Durham controlled the flow of the game and were essential for controlling possession for the Lady Knights (8-6-1).
The Knights' first-round opponent is not yet determined.
