Gold Hill's voters oust Mayor Steffen

Voters who cast ballots Tuesday in Gold Hill decided to unseat incumbent mayor Bucky Steffen in favor of former Councilwoman Jan Fish.

Co-owner of Laurel Hill Golf Course, Fish received 251 votes, or 68.4 percent of 347 total votes cast.

Steffen, a semi-retired contractor known for his long beard and motorcycle, garnered 112, or 31.5 percent.

Fish left City Hall in 2006 with two four-year terms as councilwoman under her belt.

Her last tenure at City Hall, she said Tuesday, was during a rough time marred by infighting among council members and struggles over the city being required to disband its police force.

Tuesday night, Fish said she was excited for the chance to see Gold Hill "move forward in a more positive light."

"I'm just really hoping we can move forward and get some stuff done that needs to be done. I just felt like nothing much was happening and I would like to be part of solutions for the problems we do have," Fish said.

Steffen reacted to the election results, he said, with both relief and disappointment.

"The city is now going to withstand the hands of the naysayers and non-progressive people. Voters have elected two people who were here before and left," Steffen said.

"I'm still going to be involved in fundraising and charities and all the stuff I do," he said.

"I just wish the best for the city because I am just so frickin' done with City Hall. Accolades to the new city manager and the recorder. They're the only ones up there that know what the hell they're doing."

In the race for three council positions, four candidates ran a close race with incumbent Margaret Dials leading with 256 votes, or 30.2 percent, of 808 cast.

Former mayor Gus Wolf garnered 217 votes, or 25.6 percent, while newcomer Doug Reischman was leading incumbent Sam Blake 178 to 169.
