1924 - 2012

Dorella May Johnson, 87, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at her home in the Royal Oaks Retirement Home in Medford, Ore. She was born November 20, 1924, to Hazel (Harding) and Herbert Cole in Wilmington, Calif. Dorella had extensive experience in bookkeeping at several banks, culminating in many years of finance work for the Boeing Aircraft Company. She and her husband, Roger, moved to Oregon in the early 1990s from Anacortes, Wash.

Dorella loved to read and adored her cats. She was also very active in her church. Dorella was only at Royal Oak Retirement Home for eight months, but it was remarkable how many friends she made there in that short time. Along with her warm, caring nature was a surprising courage to stand up for herself and others when needed. Two weeks before her death, she was featured in a front page Mail Tribune article highlighting the palliative care program at Providence Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband (and soul mate) of 68 years, Roger Johnson, who passed away earlier this year. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Richard Cole, who passed away in 2007.

Dorella is survived by her sister, Ruth Wineteer, of Enterprise, Ore.; and many, many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Medford Congregational Church (UCC), 1801 East Jackson Street, Medford, OR 97504, or to C.A.T.S., P.O. Box 56, Medford, OR, 97501.

A memorial service celebrating Dorella's life will be held at the Medford Congregational Church at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 11, 2012, with Pastor Kurt Katzmar presiding. Funeral arrangements are by Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives.
