North Medford High wrestling coach Phillip Lopez isn't the type to get carried away.
NEWBERG — Cascade Christian goalkeeper Jessica Weber and the Challengers edged Dayton 1-0 in the first round of the Class 3A/2A/1A state playoffs, triumphing in a thrilling penalty kick shootout to advance on Tuesday.
Weber earned the victory between the pipes and booted in the game-winning penalty kick at George Fox University. The Challengers (10-5-1) converted four of their six penalty kicks, while Dayton netted three.
After a scoreless regulation and overtime session, Cascade Christian and Dayton (11-5-2) each knocked in three of their opening five PK attempts. Kelly Bales, Jillian Emard and Katelyn Stephens scored for the Challengers, while Shelby Byerly, Elizabeth Meaders and Mireya Vazquez had the Pirates' goals.
Weber then booted the deciding score into the bottom right corner to end the match.
In goal, Weber and Dayton goalkeeper Morgyn Erb each made seven saves during the 80-minute regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods.
Cascade Christian will next play at Valley Catholic (11-0-2) in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
TIGARD 3, NORTH MEDFORD 2 — At Tigard, Halley Folsom and Amanda Hisey each scored goals for North Medford but the Black Tornado could not preserve its lead during the second-round Class 6A state playoff match.
Folsom split a pair of defenders and booted in a shot just as she entered the goal box 10 minutes into the match. Tigard's Kyla Smart evened things in the 26th minute.
Hisey rocketed in a shot from just beyond the 18-yard line with a defender on her left shoulder in the 44th to regain North's advantage.
The Tigers (12-1-3) got their match-tying goal from Natalie Bryant in the 57th and the game-winner from Emilee Cincotta in the 64th.
Folsom managed to score in a jumble near the goal line with 2:30 remaining for an apparent equalizer but it was wiped away with an offsides call.
Goalkeeper Bailey O'Connor recorded several difficult saves, while outside defender Marisa Hillburn and stopper Tori Foy were both strong for the Black Tornado (10-5).
NORTH BEND 1, HIDDEN VALLEY 0 — At North Bend, Mikena Shay slipped in the game-winning goal for North Bend with 48 seconds to go in the first-round Class 4A state playoff match.
The Bulldogs (14-1) will next face Mazama in the quarterfinals. The Vikings beat North Marion 5-0.
Hidden Valley finished the year 11-5.
PHILOMATH 7, NORTH VALLEY 0 — At Philomath, Philomath (12-3) blanked North Valley (8-7-1) in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.
Philomath will next take on La Grande in the quarterfinals after the Tigers beat Klamath Union 1-0 in a penalty kick shootout.
CLACKAMAS 5, SOUTH MEDFORD 1 — At Clackamas, Greg Rapet scored on a penalty kick in the 75th minute for South Medford (11-4) in the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs.
Mason Buechler, Jason Udland, Adan Trejo, Aaron Ahlstrom and Max Jette had goals for the Cavaliers (15-1-1), who led the Panthers 2-0 at halftime en route to their eighth straight victory.
WILSONVILLE 3, ASHLAND 0 — At Wilsonville, Ashland trailed 1-0 at halftime and couldn't catch up with Wilsonville in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs.
The Wildcats (7-4-4) scored in the 15th, 42nd and 66th minutes.
Defenders Nick Chouard, Gabe Young and Max Heine played strong for the Grizzlies (8-7).
PORTLAND CHRISTIAN 1, ST. MARY'S 0 — At Portland, Solomon Blashishin netted the game-winner for Portland Christian with about 10 minutes to go in the first round of the Class 3A/2A/1A state playoffs at David Douglas High.
Goalkeeper Derek Reynolds, sweeper Renzo Marchini and defender Kimi Zhang played well for St. Mary's (6-9).
Portland Christian (12-4) will next play Catlin Gabel in the quarterfinals.
