  • Vanston Shaw, a retired superintendent of California schools, has won a seat on the Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission, according to unofficial results from the Jackson County Elections Office.
Long-term Parks Commissioner Jim Lewis, who ran unopposed, was re-elected.
Shaw ran against Vicki Tripoli, who said during the campaign that she was dealing with a family medical emergency and probably wouldn't accept the position if elected.
Shaw garnered 58.86 percent, or 4,294 votes, to Tripoli's 40.11 percent, or 2,926 votes, according to unofficial results.
Jackson County will certify official results on Nov. 26, said Jackson County Clerk Chris Walker.
Shaw said that after he takes office, he would like parks and city officials to discuss stable funding for Ashland parks. Last year, the city took money from the quasi-independent parks department in order to fund city operations, a move Shaw opposes.
