Raiders' rally falls short in tournament loss

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Twenty-third-ranked Southern Oregon stormed back from a 10-point first-half deficit to take a four-point halftime lead, but Shawnee State came back to defeat the Raiders 88-86 Saturday in the consolation game of the Daytona Mitsubishi/Kia Shootout at ICI Center.

Southern Oregon and Shawnee State are both 2-2.

The Raiders connected on 49.2 percent of their shots (32 of 65), with Kyle Tedder scoring 23 points. David Sturner made nine of 13 shots to score 21 and grabbed nine rebounds, while Joel Spear added 17 points. Eric Thompson tallied 14 points, and Terriel Thomas totaled 11 rebounds.

Ian Nixson led the Bears with 22 points, while Tyler Morgan tallied a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Shawnee State scored the first seven points of the game, and the Bears pushed their lead to as many as 10 points when Morgan hit a free throw to make it 31-21 with 7:18 to play in the first half.

Sturner hit a layup for the Raiders to spark 22-8 SOU run. The Raiders claimed their first lead with 2:05 to go in the period when Spear made a layup to put SOU up 38-37.

Southern Oregon went into the break with a 47-43 advantage, but Shawnee State tied it early in the second half. As the period wound down, it looked like the Bears might pull away, claiming a seven-point lead with less than three minutes to play.

The Raiders scored the next five points, however, including a 3-pointer by Tedder, but the Bears responded with five straight points to go back up by seven with 19 seconds remaining.

Thompson and Tedder then hit late 3-pointers.

The Raiders play in the Oregon Tech Tournament next weekend, where they will face Holy Names and William Jessup.
