Letter may hold clue to murder of taxi driver

Medford police are trying to contact an anonymous person who wrote the agency a letter shortly after the October murder of cab driver William "Huey" Huson.

"I can't comment on what the letter contains, but there's certainly information in the letter that leads us to believe the writer or the author has information on the case," said Lt. Mike Budreau. "We believe it was sent very shortly after the homicide occurred."

How to help

Anyone with information on the case is urged to call 541-770-4783 or to provide details through www.tipsubmit.com.

Budreau said the letter is "uniquely" written. It was written in pencil on ribbon paper that also contained some pink ink, similar to the paper inserted into cash registers and used to print receipts. The envelope, addressed to the "Police Cheif" (sic), is made out of notebook paper and taped together. It is not signed, and there is no return address.

"We really need to talk to this person and find out a little more information," Budreau said.

Huson's body was found in a field near Helo Drive off Vilas Road at 8:23 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 21. He was killed by a gunshot to the head. Police said Huson had picked up a fare at 10:41 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, in front of Howiee's on Front in downtown Medford. He reported he would be taking that fare to an unknown address on Vilas Road. The cab company dispatcher did not hear from him again and contacted police.

Officers responded and found Huson's cab, parked and unoccupied, in a parking lot near Ninth and Almond streets at 5:02 a.m. Oct. 21. Later that morning they found Huson's body.

Police have previously reached a possible description of a suspect, saying it could be a white male between 25 and 35 years old, about 6 feet 1 inches tall and between 170 and 190 pounds. Police have said the suspect could have pockmarks and acne on his face, no facial hair and was wearing a black baseball cap, black jacket and jeans.

Investigators also released a list of property stolen from Huson's cab, including a black leather shaving kit bag, electronic vapor cigarette, brown bi-fold leather wallet with personal information and paperwork, and an undisclosed amount of cash.
