UO economic index shows Rogue Valley makes gains

EUGENE — The latest University of Oregon Regional Economic Index shows the Rogue Valley region continues to make steady, albeit slow gains. The six-month moving average stands at a minus 0.62 reading from its 14-year average, compared to minus-0.83 a year ago. Like Central Oregon, high rates of unemployment and limited new residential construction continue to weigh on the measure.

While Portland and Salem have dropped recently, the Eugene-Springfield area is showing more consistent improvement, with the last three readings all near or above zero. A sharp decline in initial unemployment claims supported this month's number.
