A Medford man found dead at the base of a steep cliff near Applegate Creek in Northern California died from a gunshot wound, police said.

Michael Christopher MacCallum, 34, was found Tuesday, Nov. 20 after family and friends reported him missing. He celebrated his birthday Nov. 17 and had been on a camping trip in Hilt, Calif.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department declined to release the number of gunshot wounds because the investigation continues and persons of interest still are being interviewed. Sheriff Jon Lopey said investigators are getting closer to identifying a suspect each day.

"We're pretty satisfied with the way the investigation is progressing," Lopey said.

Police spent Tuesday recanvassing the scene where MacCallum's body was found. They also served search warrants around Medford and conducted interviews.

MacCallum drove for Checker Cab in Medford.
