  • Ashland police arrested an Ashland man Thursday evening who was indicted on 14 counts of encouraging child sex abuse.
Torin E. Eggers, 29, who allegedly possessed more than 200 images and several videos depicting child pornography on a micro SD card recovered by police in August, was arrested at a relative's home on Granite Street in Ashland, police said.
Eggers is lodged in Jackson County Jail, and his bail is set at $500,000, jail records show.
A Jackson County grand jury Wednesday indicted Eggers on seven counts of first-degree encouraging child sex abuse and seven additional counts of second-degree encouraging child sex abuse after hearing evidence presented by Ashland police and the Southern Oregon High-Tech Crimes Task Force, police said.
The first-degree charges stem from Eggers allegedly downloading the content. The second-degree charges stem from him allegedly possessing it.
"You are actively reaching out in some manner and taking it for yourself," said Sgt. Tighe O'Meara of Ashland police. "They are two sides to the same coin."
The indictment came after a joint investigation between APD and the high-tech crimes unit was initiated on Aug. 23. A search warrant was executed at a home on the 200 block of Laurel Street in Ashland a week later.
"We were acting on information provided from a member of the community," O'Meara said.
These types of investigations are often initiated by a tip, O'Meara said, but law enforcement officers also work undercover to expose online sex offenders and predators.
