  • "Marvelous" Mary Louise Hurst moved into her heavenly mansion on the hilltop (her favorite song) October 29, from her residence at Northridge Center, Medford, just one month after a 99th birthday party celebration.
Mary was born September 25, 1913, on a farm in Marlow, Okla. She grew up in Texas, moved to California during WWII, then relocated to Sams Valley and Medford in 1959.
Mary's parents were Nora Lela Ritchie Sheffield and Charles Thomas Sheffield. She was the last survivor of their five children.
While living in California Mary had several jobs but worked mainly for Bank of America in San Francisco. After moving to Medford she worked for the Big Y. Mary was a devoted member of Lozier Lane Baptist Church for many years.
Mary was skilled at crafts and crocheted beautifully. She especially enjoyed playing Skipbo and games with the girls. Mary did water aerobics at Providence Hospital pool for many years. She always enjoyed music.
Survivors left to cherish her memory are daughter, Doris Hurst (Ken); step-daughters, Reba Rodrigues (Al), Freda Latter (Dick), and June Lee (Bob); daughter-in-love, Mary Esther Gaines; granddaughters, Cynthia K. Sekerke (Wayne) and Kendra Louise Smalley (Mike); plus a number of great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends. She was preceded in death by husband, Jess Hurst (1971); son, Delbert Gaines (2010); and step-daughter, Judy Lott (2005).
A memorial service was held at Northridge Center and a family memorial will be held in the spring.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lozier Lane Baptist Church, 794 Lozier Lane, Medford, OR 97501.
