  • EUGENE — Kyle Tedder made a key driving layup at the end of regulation and hit the tie-breaking free throw with 24 seconds to go in overtime as the 16th-ranked Southern Oregon men's basketball team battled back from a nine-point second-half deficit to beat Northwest Christian 71-69 Friday night at the Morse Event Center.
    In the Cascade Conference opener for both teams, the Raiders (7-3) were down 69-68 in OT when Tedder was fouled by Jordan Myers. The junior guard made both free throws, and Northwest Christian's Greg Shepard missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
    Dex Daum made 6 of 7 shots, including all five of his attempts from beyond the 3-point arc, to score a team-high 17 points in the win. Eric Thompson posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, Tedder tallied 11 points and Jeff Bush and Terriel Thomas each finished with 10 points. Southern Oregon made 50 percent of its shots in the game (27 of 54), including 11 of 22 from 3-point range, to overcome 23 turnovers.
    Jordan Buhler scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Northwest Christian (6-4). Travis Pacos finished with 14 points and Greg Shepard added 11. The Beacons shot only 37.7 percent (29 of 77) in the contest.
    Both teams struggled during the first 10 minutes as the Raiders held an 11-8 advantage at the midway point of the first half. Northwest Christian used a 12-point streak to turn the three-point deficit into a nine-point advantage with less than four minutes remaining in the half, and the Beacons went into the break with a 27-20 lead.
    A 17-10 run to start the period pulled the Raiders back to even less than seven minutes into the half, with Tedder's 3 tying the game at 37-37.
    Southern Oregon built its largest lead of the game a few minutes later when Daum made a 3-pointer to put SOU up 47-41, but Northwest Christian scored the next six points to tie it up, and neither team led by more than one possession down the stretch.
    A Tedder layup gave SOU a 62-60 lead in the final minute, but Buhler tied it with seven seconds remaining to force overtime.
    SOUTHERN OREGON 79, NORTHWEST CHRISTIAN 68 — At Eugene, Southern Oregon built an eight-point halftime lead and pulled away from Northwest Christian in the Cascade Collegiate Conference opener for both teams at the Morse Event Center.
    Alexi Smith posted a double-double for Southern Oregon (9-1) and led everybody in both points (20) and rebounds (13). Melissa Sweat made 6 of 8 shot attempts to total 18 points, and Angelica Cahee added 10 points and five steals as the Raiders shot 48.3 percent (29-of-60) to overcome 29 turnovers.
    Lindsey Shearer tallied a double-double for Northwest Christian (6-4) with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Aly Bruns totaled 11 points and Andrea Gloss and Kelsey Atkins each added 10.
