Carport fire destroys three vehicles, structure

A fire ripped through a carport at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Oak Grove Road in Medford early Monday morning, destroying at least three cars and the carport itself, fire officials said.

Fire crews responded to the call at 2:30 a.m. They were able to prevent the blaze from spreading to the nearby apartment units, which house about 10 residents. Medford Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Brian Fish said all were safely evacuated during knockdown efforts and that no one was hurt. "(Crews) made a good stop keeping it out of that structure," Fish said.

The apartment complex did sustain some minor damage, including a broken window from the nearby heat.

Four engines responded from Medford Fire-Rescue, along with an engine from the Jacksonville Fire Department. Crews knocked down the blaze in about a half-hour, Fish said.

The carport also was close to a nearby laundry room and storage facility. A fourth car adjacent to the carport probably will be a total loss because of the damage it sustained, fire officials said.

Crews estimate about $100,000 worth of damage in all. The cause still still under investigation.

"We have fire investigators digging through the ashes," Deputy Fire Chief Gordon Sletmoe said Monday afternoon.

The cause of a fire that ripped through a rental home at 414 Jackson St. in Medford on Nov. 28 also is under investigation.
