Oregon gets $20 million federal grant

SALEM, Ore. — The Obama Administration has awarded Oregon a $20 million grant for the state's effort to improve early-childhood education.

Gov. John Kitzhaber's office announced the grant on Thursday. It will be used to improve training for preschool teachers and to measure the effectiveness of programs that are supposed to prepare children for kindergarten.

The Legislature in March approved Kitzhaber's effort to improve the coordination of health and education programs that serve children before they reach school age.

The grant is part of the federal Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge run by the U.S. departments of Education and Health and Human Services.
