Grants Pass officer could be cited in crash

An on-duty Grants Pass police officer may be cited after his vehicle struck a bicycle rider Wednesday evening. The police cruiser struck a bicycle being ridden by a 40-year-old Grants Pass man at Seventh and L streets. The bike rider was not hurt.

The 8:30 p.m. incident remains under investigation by the Oregon State Police. The bike rider was Rafael Diaz Olivas. The officer driving the police car was Robert Shaw, 27.

Olivas was riding west on L Street in the pedestrian crosswalk when Shaw turned into him and made contact with the bike's handlebars, according to an OSP report. The bike was not damaged, according to police.

Deputy Chief Bill Landis of the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety said the bike had a light on it and that Shaw, eastbound on L Street, was turning his car left onto Seventh Street, heading to a reported burglary that had occurred earlier.

"We had OSP investigate, and a citation is pending with Officer Shaw, who was at fault," Landis said.
