  • Born in South Gate, Calif. October 27, 1926, to Winfield Scott and Erva Vay (Sayles) Hancock. He passed away peacefully at his home in Ashland, Ore. November 24, 2012.
    Beloved husband of 56 years and honored father...he held truth and sincerity in extremely high regard.
    Vern resided on Catalina Island in the 1930s with his mother; brother, Kenneth Scott Hancock; and stepfather, S.S. Silva.
    In the Navy as an artificer special optical, third class during WWII, he was stationed in the Philippines helping to mop up after the war, he had a couple of good fishing stories to tell. He was a well known So. Calif. desert motorcycle racer in the early to mid-1950s. Also raced in Europe and Baja - a trophy winner many times. Hired by Bell Helmets as their first employee, Vern took charge of the R&D department, learning much about fiberglass and resins.
    In 1956, he and Joan Carolyn Griley were married in South Gate, Calif., purchased their own home, and had two sons, Michael Verne (1957-2000) and Timothy Barton. They moved to Owens Valley on the east side of the Sierra for eight years where Vern had an auto repair business.
    He was a licensed private pilot who built and taxied his own plane. He was a capable racing sloop skipper and an amazing mechanic and tool designer.
    Vern and Joan designed and built their Ashland home and hobby farm beginning in 1978. Vern's Rogue Valley work history included Coastal Dental Supply, Jay Allen Automotive, and he retired from Darex Corp. after eight years where he was in R&D.
    A member of Ashland Early Bird Lions, Vern many times couriered for the Eye Bank. He and Joan were friends of both Ashland First Presbyterian Church and most recently, Ashland Bible Church.
    As grandfather, he leaves Tim's children, Jennifer Vay, Katherine Anne, and Robert Verne currently of Coos Bay, Ore.; sister-in-law, Judith Jandelli; nephew, Brian Scott (Jackie) Hancock; niece, Candy (Adam) Castorena; daughter-in-law, Karen Lyn (Chuck) Hancock Hoelting; and grand-nephews and nieces.
    His ashes will be placed with Michael's on the Greensprings in late spring of 2013.
