  • EUGENE — Crater's youth movement will be tested early this season. Saturday, the Comets passed.
Crater watched its double-digit lead get cut to one point by Thurston in the final minute but finished strong to pickup its first win, 48-43, in the third-place game of the Luke Roth Tipoff Tournament at Sheldon High School.
Sophomore Courtney Setzer scored a game-high 20 points and dominated the offensive boards early, and Britt Scott and Becca Heard added nine points apiece for Crater (1-2), which has seven underclassmen on its varsity roster.
"Overall, the team's defensive effort has changed," Crater coach J.T. Thomas said. "The kids have taken a much more personal and aggressive style to the floor, and they're holding each other accountable for their defensive approach. And our leader, Britt Scott, just does a really good job of controlling the team on the other end."
Erica Cogburn scored 16 points and Kenzie Weston nine to pace Thurston (0-4).
The Comets hit seven 3-pointers, including three by Scott.
Thomas credited Setzer with setting the tone early by controlling the glass, particularly on the offensive end.
"She's just a very sharp player," Thomas said of Setzer. "She's got an instinct for the hoop on the offensive boards, always has. She got some huge rebound putbacks and got fouled a couple times late as well."
