Family struggles to find cheer for Christmas after death, layoff

Clothes and books and toys and more are needed for a young Head Start family devastated by death and job loss.

This single mom of three was working full time. But just last week she was laid off.

"Right before Christmas," said staffers, adding the news came on top of an even more devastating blow. In March of this year, the children's father was murdered.

Cassie is struggling and needs financial and emotional support. She also needs help meeting the needs of her family. Things were hard before her layoff, but now she has no way to provide her children with the basic necessities, much less any holiday extras.

Isaiah, 6, is in kindergarten. He wears size 5 clothes, size 12 shoes and needs both. He also likes books, action figures and would really benefit from Leap Frog games.

Skyler is 4 years old and currently attends Head Start. He does not need clothes as he fits in Isaiah's hand-me-downs. But Skyler loves books, games, Disney movies and action figures.

Both boys are "really big on action figures," the staff reports.

The baby, Kaydance, is 1 year old and wears size 12-to-18 months clothes and size 4 shoes. She is in need of clothes, and age-appropriate educational toys. Wheels that spin, bells that chime and other musical toys might be a big hit, staff said.

Staff members at Head Start said the entire family enjoys music.

Cassie's bills keep rolling in and she could use some financial help until she can find another job. Perhaps some community Santa's also might find some special gift for this struggling mom.

"Cassie's is doing all she can, and has been there for her children," staff said in a note. "Now she is just needing someone to be there for her."

Anyone interested in assisting this family is asked to call Barbara Sonday, a Head Start family advocate, at 541-772-7707.
