LOS ANGELES — Daman Starring hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points and former Phoenix High standout Alex Young contributed seven points, four assists and three steals to help UC Irvine defeat Southern California 61-54 on Thursday night.
Adam Folker added 12 points, and Michael Wilder had nine points and seven rebounds for the Anteaters (6-7), who had lost by one point in overtime to Pac-12 opponent UCLA on Nov. 13.
Omar Oraby scored 12 points, and former Irvine player Eric Wise had 10 for USC (4-7), which has lost seven of its last nine games and fell to 3-3 at home.
Irvine led nearly the entire game, going up by 14 points early in the second half on a basket by Young. Starring then scored 11 in a row, hitting three 3-pointers, to extend their lead to 52-41.
Portland State 63, Idaho State 49
At Portland, Lateef McMullan scored 20 points and Portland State opened Big Sky conference play with a win.
McMullan was 7 of 9 from the field and had four assists and four steals.
Michael Harthun, who starred at South Medford High, scored 13 points, and Renado Parker had 10 points and six rebounds. Aaron Moore led with seven rebounds.
