  • COOS BAY — Reid Shipley showed why he's the top-ranked 170-pound wrestler in the state, leading North Medford to a dominant performance in the Bay City Duals.
Shipley pinned all five of his opponents and North Medford beat top-seeded North Salem 51-24 in the final on Saturday to clinch first place with a 5-0 record in the two-day tournament.
The Black Tornado beat Newport 50-15 and Marshfield 60-21 on Friday, then on Saturday hammered Reedsport 67-6 in the quarterfinals and Coquille 49-24 in the semifinals.
"The kids wrestled well," North Medford coach Nolan Harris said. "I think when we wrestled some of the tougher opponents in the end, we rose to the occasion. And some of our younger guys are wrestling tough. We had a couple guys out of the lineup and we were still able to go over there and rack up a bunch of points. The kids are picking up bonus points and I think that's what's important in dual meets."
Shipley (14-2), who was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler, racked up many of those bonus points to become one of five North Medford wrestlers to go 5-0 at the Duals. In his most impressive performance, Shipley pinned Coquille's Sye Yates, a two-time state placer who's ranked No. 1 in Class 5A, in the third round.
Also going undefeated for North were freshman 106-pounder Henry Cox, senior 113-pounder Austin Mitchell, senior 195-pounder Kaden Johnson and senior 285-pounder Avion Maloney.
Cox had four pins and one forfeit. One of those pins came against Marshfield's Tyler Campbell, who recently placed second at the Coast Classic.
North next travels to Reno for the Sierra Nevada Classic on Thursday and Friday.
