Suspect sought in nabbing of purse

Medford police say bag was taken from 76-year-old's grocery cart Saturday at Center Drive Fred Meyer

Medford police are looking for a woman who allegedly snatched a 76-year-old woman's purse from her grocery cart Saturday.

According to Lt. Mike Budreau, at about 2:20 p.m. Saturday, the older woman was shopping at the south Fred Meyer at 1301 Center Drive, when she sensed that she was being followed by a woman who was walking slowly behind her.

The store security team thought the woman's behavior was odd, as well, and was watching her on video from the security office. They saw the young woman run away with the purse, which they suspect she grabbed when the senior shopper had her back to the cart, Budreau said.

Employees chased the woman out of the store where she jumped into the passenger seat of a white 1997 Ford Ranger pickup, police said. A man and a woman already were in the truck, which then sped off.

Witnesses reported that the truck's license plate number was 259 EEB, which is registered to an address on Lewis Avenue in Medford. Authorities have not located the vehicle or spoken with anyone at that address at this time.

The victim immediately reported her credit cards stolen and, so far, they haven't been used, Budreau said.

She also had what he described as "a considerable amount of cash" in U.S. currency as well as euros and Swiss francs in her purse.

The suspect is described as a white woman in her early 30s with a thin build. She was wearing a white tank top and blue jeans and had shoulder-length brown hair.

Medford police are asking for anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 541-770-4783.
