Nov. 17, 1928 - Dec. 27, 2012

Roy E. Hayden, 84, of Salem, formerly of the Lebanon and Brownsville area, died Thursday, December 27, 2012, at Salem Hospital.

Roy was born November 17, 1928 in Shelton, Wash., the son of Albert and Bessie (Mortimor) Hayden. Roy was raised in Brownsville, Ore. and graduated from Brownsville High School in 1946. He then entered the Navy and following his discharge began his career as an electrician. Roy was the youngest recipient of the Electrical Journeyman's License in the State of Oregon. He married Earletta Saxton on June 24, 1951 in Lebanon, Oregon.

Roy worked as an electrician in plywood mills in Roseburg and Grants Pass and later as the purchasing director for Southwest Forest Industries from which he retired in 1990.

Roy was a member of the Lebanon First Christian Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the outdoors and trips to Arizona. In the 1970s he helped build a saw mill in Liberia, West Africa and also held the patent for T-111 plywood.

Roy is survived by his wife, Earletta of Salem; daughter, Laura Louise Chastain of Arizona; and three grandchildren, Kathryn Chastain, Craig Chastain, and Jacalyn Watson. He was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth Dale Hayden in 1988.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 3, 2012 at the Lebanon First Christian Church. Burial will be at the Lebanon IOOF Cemetery. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
