Hanke, OSU fourth at Midlands

EVANSTON, Ill. — The Oregon State wrestling team finished in fourth place at the 50th annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Sunday.

Senior Chad Hanke took home first-place honors among his heavyweight counterparts. Hanke was one of three top-five finishers for head coach Jim Zalesky as both Mike Mangrum (141 pounds) and Taylor Meeks (197) placed third.

Hanke went a combined 5-0 during the two-day tournament, winning three matches during Day 1 and a pair on Day 2. The fourth-ranked wrestler in the nation defeated a total of three top-five opponents en route to his second individual weight class title during the 2012-13 season.

Hanke's two matches on Sunday pitted him against the No. 1 and No. 3 wrestlers in the nation, with No. 4 winning both times. The Dayton native eliminated Central Michigan's Jarod Trice during the semifinal match and Pittsburgh's Zach Thomusseit in the heavyweight championship bout. He was one of five OSU wrestlers tabbed by event organizers earlier in the week as a contender to win an individual weight class title.
