  • CENTRAL POINT — Cody Dismukes scored eight of his game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter as Crater rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final frame to stun North Medford, 60-58, Wednesday in the Southern Oregon Hybrid boys basketball opener for both teams at Crater High School.
After Evan Erskine's steal and breakaway layup gave Crater its first lead of the game with 45 seconds to go, another North Medford turnover led to a pair of free throws by Crater's Tommy Stewart, giving the Comets a four-point cushion. North's Oshea Bailey hit a floater in the lane to cut it to two, and after Stewart missed the front end of a one-and-one the Black Tornado had one last shot.
North opted to go for the win, but Tristen Holmes' long 3-point attempt missed and the Comets (7-4, 1-0 SOH) celebrated what is believed to be their first win over North Medford (7-3, 0-1)) since 1999.
"To get a signature win like this is huge for us and hopefully we can keep that momentum going," said Crater head coach John Parent, whose Comets already have as many wins as they had all of last season. "These kids have been through a lot of blood, sweat and tears, and to have something like that happen to them — I'm really proud of them."
Dismukes added six rebounds and two assists and Erskine had 11 points, four assists and four steals.
Brandon DeBerry scored 11 and Bailey 10 for the Tornado, which lost a double-overtime thriller to another SOH foe, South Medford, in Saturday's Abby's Holiday Classic championship.
North jumped out to a 23-17 lead after one and was up 37-25 at the half before the Comets began to cut into the lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Kory Bennett and RJ Morgan tied the game with about 1:30 to go.
Morgan and Erskine defended on Holmes' last-gasp 3, which beat the buzzer before clanging off the rim and backboard.
Parent said his first reaction was, "a little shock at first, and then unbelievable joy."
