Samuel Leslie Jones, 92, of Medford, Ore., passed away December 22, 2012. He was born July 11, 1920, in Tulare, Calif., to Samuel Jones and Margaret Malinda Dwyier. He lived in Ontario, Calif., when he graduated from Chaffey Union High School, in 1938, and Caffey Junior College, in 1940. On March 30, 1941, he wed Mildred Barton, in Yuma, Ariz., and settled in Southern Calif., where their son, David, and daughter, Patricia, were born to them.
He proudly served in the Army's 7th Infantry Div. in the Philippines and Okinawa, and was honored to be awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge; Silver Star and Bronze Star Medals; and Purple Heart Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster.
Following WWII, his U.S. Postal Service career began in Calif., and continued after relocating to Ashland, Oregon. Their children Daniel, Bonnie, and Sharon were adopted from South Korea through the proxy of Mr. Harry Holt.
Most recently, he lived in Medford, Ore., where he was a member of The Church of God, and enjoyed collecting stamps, photography, journalizing detailed memoirs, and genealogy. After celebrating almost 70 years together, he lost the love of his life when Mildred passed in July 2010.
Samuel is survived by his sister, Marie Barton; five children, David Jones, Patricia Bayless, Daniel Jones, Bonnie Hall, and Sharon Buckler; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife.
A memorial was held at Royal Oak Retirement Community and Samuel has been interred with full military honors at the Eagle Point National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice Medford.
