New-look Spartans lose, 6-2, to Flyers

Kevin Antipov scored a hat trick and Stephen Palmer made 32 saves in goal as the Valencia Flyers raced out to a 4-0 lead en route to a 6-2 victory over the newly revamped Southern Oregon Spartans in a Western States Hockey League clash Friday at The RRRink.

Antipov scored two of the Flyers' first three goals, including a shorthanded goal to get the scoring started halfway through the opening period. Jacob Larsson, Austin Ehrlich and Preston Nowak added two assists apiece for Valencia (15-10), which hails from the Western Division of the WSHL.

Southern Oregon (13-11), third in the Pacific Division, was playing its first game since trading seven players to the New Mexico Renegades and parting ways with head coach Mike Stanaway.

Kevin Edwards scored both goals for the Spartans, who return to the ice against Valencia at 7:35 tonight.
