The second-ranked South Medford girls basketball team recovered from a listless first half to defeat No. 10 Roseburg 66-52 in Southern Oregon Hybrid action on Friday.
Trailing by five points at halftime, the cold-shooting Panthers (7-2, 1-0 SOH) outscored the Indians (9-3, 1-1) 23-10 in the third quarter behind five 3-point makes. Kylie Towry, who finished with 18 points, drained all three of her triples in the momentum-shifting third.
Yaremi Mejia contributed 15 points and four steals and Ashley Bolston 12 points, four assists and two steals for South.
The Panthers shot just 35 percent from the floor in the first period and 33 percent in the second before connecting on five of their seven third-quarter 3-point attempts. They shot 47 percent from the field in the third.
South knocked down nine total 3s.
Luisa Tago, making her return from a knee injury suffered on Nov. 29 — she missed seven games — had eight points and four rebounds as a starter while proving pivotal on the defensive end. She helped hold Roseburg's Shelby Snook to just six second-half points after Snook poured in 12 in the first.
"Tonight Luisa Tago was an incredible defensive force in the second half and her effort inspired her teammates," South Medford head coach Tom Cole said. "Each kid stepped up and played much more inspired. That was truly the spark that we needed."
Andee Ritter chipped in seven points, three steals and two blocks.
Snook and Pele Gianotti each had 18 points for Roseburg.
"It was really encouraging to see them stick together as a team and compete and play hard," Cole said.
