  • PHOENIX — The Mazama boys basketball team avenged an earlier loss to Phoenix on Friday, cruising past the Pirates 58-45 in the Skyline Conference opener.
    Phoenix defeated the Vikings 52-40 in the Southern Oregon Subaru Christmas Classic on Dec. 28, but the rematch tilted heavily in Mazama's favor from the onset.
    The Pirates fell behind 19-10 after missing seven layups and going 2-for-6 from the free-throw line in the opening quarter. They trailed 35-16 by halftime.
    "They outhustled us to loose balls," Phoenix head coach Glenn Johannes said.
    Jacob Ford turned in 24 points and Jimmy Marquit added 20 for the Vikings (8-6, 1-0 Sky).
    Tyson Morris had 12 points, Jose Deras 10 points and Joe Raffensperger eight points for the Pirates (5-5, 0-1).

    NORTH VALLEY 58, HIDDEN VALLEY 37 — At Merlin, JJ Chirnside led three players in double-figures for undefeated North Valley, which picked up its first Skyline Conference triumph.
    Chirnside scored 15 points, Cameron Lyon had 14 and Tristan Burke added a season-high 13 points for the Knights (11-0, 1-0 Skyline).
    The Mustangs (3-10, 0-1) were guided by J.J. Flynn's 13 points, while Mike Hults had 12 and Alan Rojas 10.
