SOU wins at OIT for first time since '99

KLAMATH FALLS — Southern Oregon stormed out to a 20-point first-half lead and held off Oregon Tech in the second half as the 12th-ranked Raiders won 74-63 in men's basketball Saturday.

It was SOU's first win over OIT in Klamath Falls since 1999.

Southern Oregon improved to 14-4 overall and 6-1 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Oregon Tech is 10-9 and 1-6.

The Raiders' Kyle Tedder continued his torrid shooting, knocking down 4 of 5 shots from 3-point range and 6 of 8 overall to lead the Raiders with 22 points.

David Sturner dominated down low, grabbing 23 rebounds to tie for the fourth most in a single game in SOU history. He also scored 14 points.

Eric Thompson tallied 13 points and eight rebounds for SOU and Taylor Roos 10 points.

OIT's Josh Johnson led all scorers with 27 points, making five 3-pointers to finish as the only Owl in double figures.

With Southern Oregon's 76-60 win over then-No. 2 Oregon Tech on Nov. 20, the Raiders have won two games against OIT in the same season for the first time since 1999. They're scheduled to meet once more on Feb. 2 in Ashland.

Southern Oregon scored the first eight points and took a 20-point lead when a 3-pointer by Tedder made it 29-9 with 8:58 to play in the first half.

The Raiders matched that lead with less than two minutes remaining in the opening period when another Tedder 3 made it 38-18. Oregon Tech scored the next six points before a pair of Sturner free throws closed out the half with SOU leading 40-24.

Oregon Tech worked its way back into the game in the second half, using a seven-point streak to pull within four points at 53-49 with 6:20 remaining. The Raiders scored the next four points, but OIT tallied the next six to make it 58-56 following a Johnson 3-pointer.

Tedder responded with 3-pointers on consecutive possessions for SOU, and the Raiders made all 10 free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory.

The Raiders host Evergreen at 7:30 p.m. Friday.


Women's Basketball

OREGON TECH 100, SOUTHERN OREGON 82 — At Klamath Falls, Oregon Tech scored 58 second-half points to pull away in the Cascade Collegiate Conference game.

Melissa Sweat scored a game-high 32 points to go with seven rebounds for the Raiders, who dropped to 13-5 overall and 3-4 in the CCC.

Ashland's Allison Gida added 15 points and Alexi Smith finished with 12.

Rebekah Matteri led Oregon Tech (12-5, 5-2) with 19 points to lead a group of five players in double figures. Former North Medford star Karissa Dixon made 7 of 11 field goals and scored 18 points to go with four assists for the Owls, while Maria Ramirez posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Oregon Tech opened the game on a 7-0 streak, but the Raiders scored the next 11 points to claim an early lead.

Southern Oregon led by as many as eight points following a Sweat layup just over eight minutes into the game. From that point, OIT used an 11-1 run to pull ahead 25-23.

A 12-2 Owl run helped them build a 42-37 halftime advantage.

OIT began the second half with another run, scoring 11 of the period's first 15 points to go ahead by 12.

SOU rallied to within two points when a Gida jumper made it 55-53 with 12:48 to play. From that point the Owls outscored the visitors 45-29.

The Raiders host Evergreen at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
