Flyers rally to slip past Spartans

Southern Oregon falls to 0-2 since major roster overhaul

The Southern Oregon Spartans built an early lead but couldn't preserve it, falling 5-3 to the Valencia Flyers in Western States Hockey League action at The RRRink on Saturday.

First-period goals by Eli Bordak and Sam Holeczy gave Southern Oregon a 2-0 edge before Valencia evened the score in the second. Tommy Bennett's power-play goal later in the period helped the Spartans recapture the lead, but the Flyers responded with three straight scores to gain the final advantage.

Dan Doyle made two assists for Southern Oregon (13-12). Goalkeeper Sean Buckley had 21 saves.

Hunter Jensen netted three goals and Austin Ehrlich had a goal and three assists for Valencia (16-10), which beat the Spartans 6-2 on Friday.

The teams cap their weekend series at 3:05 p.m. today at The RRRink.
