  • Two Klamath Falls women died and four other people were injured Friday evening in two-car collision on an icy stretch of Highway 140, 18 miles east of White City.
Oregon State Police said the wreck, at about 6:07 p.m., involved a 2000 Toyota Tundra pickup with a Medford man and his son and a 2001 Honda Passport carrying two men and two women.
The eastbound Toyota pickup crossed the centerline and was struck in the right side by the westbound Honda Passport. The Toyota came to rest on the highway and the Honda came to rest off the highway.
Larisa M. Bailey, a 25-year-old passenger from Klamath Falls, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 34-year old driver, Kristi Duncan, died at Rogue Regional Medical Center after she was transported by air ambulance. Neither woman was using safety restraints.
Two passengers, Kenneth E. Tevald, 39, of Weathersfield, Conn., and Dennis J. Gillespie, 23, of Klamath Falls, were transported by Mercy Flights ambulance to Rogue Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. Gillespie was later transferred to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield.
Jacob Layer, 37, the driver of the Toyota, and his 8-year-old son, Joel Layer, were transported by ambulance to Rogue Regional Medical Center. Their injuries are non-life threatening.
An OSP spokesman said other than the slippery road conditions the agency has yet to determine specifics leading to the collision.
The highway was closed more than five hours while state police investigated the scene. An OSP collision reconstructionist is assisting with the investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
Police said there was no immediate evidence that drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash, said OSP Lt. Gregg Hastings.
