Max King picked top trail runner

Max King, a record seven-time Pear Blossom winner, was the unanimous selection as Trail Runner of the Year picked by Trail Runner Magazine.

King, 32, followed up a banner 2011 season with an impressive number of victories in 2012.

The former Crater High standout posted a course-record time of 5 minutes, 24.58 seconds this fall in the 50th running of the JFK 50-mile in Maryland.

In September, King registered victories in the USATF Trail National Championship in Bend, the 21K XTERRA Trail Run National Championships for the fifth time in Ogden, Utah, and the Ultra Race of Champions 100K in Charlottesville, Va.

Additionally, King demonstrated his versatility at the U.S. Olympic team trials for the marathon and track and field. He had a personal best in the marathon of 2:14.35, placing 19th, and was sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:30.54).

King lives in Bend with his wife, Dory, and two children.
