Beavers lasso Comboys

LARAMIE, Wyo. — The Oregon State wrestling team, ranked in the top 15 nationally, made it a perfect weekend with a second triumph in three days. This time it was at the hands of the Wyoming Cowboys (ranked 15th and 20th), 21-12, on Sunday.

The Beavers, now 4-3 and 1-1 in the Pac-12, used wins from six different weight classes to go ahead in the 11-point victory. With the loss, Wyoming drops to 6-3 and remains 1-1 in the Western Wrestling Conference.

Leading the way for head coach Jim Zalesky's squad was 141-pounder Mike Mangrum and 157-pound wrestler RJ Pena, who both earned bonus points in their individual match victories. Mangrum took to the mats with OSU and Wyoming knotted up at 6-6, but the No. 4 ranked senior used a technical fall (16-0) against the Cowboys' Kyle Komata to give his team the lead for good at 11-6.

Following a 4-2 Scott Sakaguchi decision, Pena won via major decision (11-3) over UW's Andy McCulley in the 157-pound bout, making it a commanding 12-point Beaver lead at 18-6. Despite Wyoming victories in two of the final three matches, the OSU lead was too much to overcome as OSU secured its 19th all-time win over the Cowboys and third in the last four years.

Other Oregon State winners on Sunday included fifth-ranked heavyweight Chad Hanke (7-4, Dec.) and 133-pounders Drew Van Anrooy (9-5, Dec.) and Alex Elder (9-2, Dec.).

The Beavers, who are ranked No. 13 and No. 15 nationally, next host Stanford Saturday.
