REDMOND — Crater's wrestling team put itself in prime position during the first of two days at the Oregon Wrestling Classic on Friday at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center.
The Comets won their four-team pool with a 3-0 record and will square off against Oregon City at 10 this morning for the right to advance into the semifinals at the team dual tourney.
Crater opened with a 57-20 victory over Barlow and then backed that with wins over McMinnville (42-31) and Canby (47-23) to take the top seed in its pool.
Other four-team pool winners included Roseburg, David Douglas and Hillsboro.
Four Comets posted undefeated 3-0 records on Friday. Freshman Cavin Gillespie went unbeaten at 170 pounds and was joined by Wyatt Haas (195), Jarrett Baker (220) and Derrick Turituri (285).
For good measure, Crater's junior varsity team competed in the 2A bracket and posted a 3-1 record.
In 3A action, Illinois Valley also went undefeated on Day 1. The Cougars opened with a 51-30 win over Santiam Christian, then beat Gervais 48-27 and Harrisburg 45-30 to win its four-team pool.
