A house fire in Central Point Monday morning destroyed one bedroom and caused smoke damage throughout the home, according to officials from Fire District No. 3.
Three engines from District 3 and one engine from Medford Fire-Rescue responded to a call from one of the homeowners at about 10:25 a.m. Monday and headed for the home at 447 Grand Ave., according to District 3 Capt. Bryan Cohee.
Cohee said that crews arrived within five minutes to find smoke coming from the small, one-story home, and after entering the house found flames in a back bedroom.
"I heard fire trucks and sure enough a fire was starting," said Marissa Emery, a neighbor. Emery said she was just returning home to her own house next door when fire crews arrived.
"You could just barely see the flames," Emery said.
The cause of the fire was unknown Monday, Cohee said.
The owners of the home, Andrew and Darci Poe, were out of the house before fire crews arrived.
Andrew Poe said the house is insured, and he lives there with his wife and two young children. According to Jackson County property records, the 1,020-square-foot home was built in 1951.
Several neighbors said the family had recently completed a series of construction projects on the house, including installing new outdoor siding and painting the exterior of the house.
Fire crews had to cut a large ventilation hole in the roof of the house to vent the fire, according to Cohee.
Most of the fire damage was contained to the bedroom where the fire started, said Cohee, but smoke permeated the home. Two windows in the bedroom were blown out and revealed a charred room inside.
Fire crews were able to knock out the fire, which didn't threaten any nearby residences, within seven or eight minutes. After the fire was extinguished, crews began tossing out items from the bedroom, including a dresser and piles of clothing.
Several officers and volunteers from the Central Point Police Department assisted with supervising the area during and after the fire.
