CAVE JUNCTION — Braden Vega delivered an upset victory for the Phoenix wrestling team, knocking off the state's second-ranked 145-pounder at the 3A level on Thursday in a nonconference dual with Illinois Valley.
With Vega's huge win over the Cougars' Gabe Miller and Jeremiah Meadors' clutch pin in the final match of the dual, the Pirates were able to hold off host Illinois Valley, 36-24.
Miller, who has been ranked second for the last two years and made as many trips to the state finals, fell to Vega in a 5-3 decision.
Meadors pinned the Cougars' Nick Worley in 3 minutes and 30 seconds at the 285-pound level. If Worley, who pinned Meadors in their last match-up this season, would have earned a pin instead, Illinois Valley would have salvaged a tie with Phoenix.
In another tough match at 170 pounds, Phoenix's Izzy Rubio earned a 5-2 decision over John Britt of IV.
