Old glasses can find a new home via Lions program

I've recently been prescribed a new pair of reading spectacles. As a result, I have a question.

If my memory is correct, in times past there was an organization that accepted used glasses to assist those who, for one reason or another, cannot afford new glasses. Could you please advise, if my memory is correct, where I could donate the "old" glasses?

— Bob, Medford

Your eyes may have changed since your last prescription, Bob, but your memory is still serving you correctly. You can indeed give those old specs a new home.

We spoke with Glory Cooper, executive director of the Southern Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Center in Medford.

"We have a drop box that's available right through the window," she said. "We accept glasses and hearing aids."

The glasses from the drop box are shipped to Wilsonville, where they're read by a lensometer. Cooper said the Wilsonville process is part of a training program for women prisoners.

"It's actually a training program up there for the women. And they really like it," she said.

Once the glasses have been sorted, they go to the Oregon Sight and Hearing Center Foundation in Portland, and shipped overseas to groups that contact the agency.

"They get cleaned up and get tagged and marked as to what the prescription reads," Cooper said.

The Southern Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Center and its handy drop box are located at 228 N. Holly St., just south of Fourth Street.

Cooper said other local eyecare providers also take donations for the center. To find other drop-off locations that may be closer to home, call the center at 541-779-3653.

"They don't have to come all the way downtown," she said. "We'd love to have them!"
