Spartans drop series opener in overtime

Jan Blasko scored his second goal of the game early in overtime to lift the division-leading Idaho Junior Steelheads to a 4-3 victory over the Southern Oregon Spartans in WSHL action at The RRRink Friday.

The Spartans (18-13-1) led 2-0 after the first period on goals by Kevin Edwards and Dan Doyle.

Edwards' goal off assists from Marcus Fred and Brandon Bronze gave Southern Oregon a 3-1 advantage 7:34 into the second period. But Stefan Brucato answered with his second goal of the period for the Junior Steelheads (31-1-1) and Blasko scored to tie the game 3-all at the 17:26 mark.

The teams went scoreless in the third period.

Blasko got his game-winner 1:13 into overtime off assists from Dominik Gabaj and Kyle Mitsunaga.

Southern Oregon goalie Sean Buckley and Idaho keeper Daniel Selby each stopped 33 shots.

The Spartans will host Idaho in the second match of the three-game series at 7:35 tonight.
