  • HILLSBORO — Crater advanced four wrestlers into this morning's semifinal round and stands third overall after the first of two days at the Reser's Tournament of Champions at Liberty High.
    Tyler Thomas (120 pounds), Morgan Walters (126), Chase Mackey (160) and Derrick Turituri (285) each remain in the championship bracket for the Comets, who scored 85 points Friday to trail only Hermiston's 103 points and Redmond's 87.5.
    Grants Pass 145-pounder Kjell Thorsen also advanced to the semifinal round, and the Cavemen are 17th out of 24 teams with 46 points. Thorsen faces top-seeded Devon Reynolds of McNary in today's semifinals.
    Hermiston advanced a tournament-high five wrestlers to the semifinal round.
    Turituri received a forfeit before advancing to the semis with a 5-2 decision over Glencoe's Walker Rabon. He will face second-seeded PJ Schubert of Pendleton today. Mackey knocked off fourth-seeded Dean Smith of Crook County to set up his semifinal match with top-seeded Abraham Rodriguez of Hermiston.
    Walters used a win over Sandy's Steven Patton and two forfeits to reach the semis and will face top-seeded Kyle Sether of Oregon City. Thomas also received two forfeits and beat Roseburg's Chad Jones 3-1 in the quarterfinals to remain in championship contention. The unseeded Thomas will face No. 3 seed Wyatt Scribner of Hermiston in today's semis.
    The Comets lost a couple wrestlers to the consolation bracket after quarterfinal losses. Nate Walters (132) dropped a 5-1 decision to Oregon City's Parker Folliard, while Dillon Ulrey (138) lost 8-4 to Sprague's Zach Zehner.
    In second-round action, Wyatt Haas (195) was upset by Grants Pass' Michael VanLohuizen and Jarrett Baker (220) lost to Pendleton's Jack Ezell, 12-7.
