Council ponders illegal fireworks and crime in parks

Dealing with Illegal fireworks and unruly behavior in city parks will be the hot topics at a City Council study session at noon today in the Medford Room at City Hall, 411 W. Eighth St.

The council will get information from Medford police and the fire department about ways the city could control illegal fireworks, which were a problem last July 4 when some neighborhoods reported lots of fireworks flying through the air.

The council will also look at expanding an ordinance that would ban someone from all city parks if they engage in criminal behavior at any one park. Police have said an exclusion ordinance that went into effect in November 2011 decreased crime at Hawthorne. But they found offenders would just move to another park and engage in the same bad behavior.

Since the meeting is a study session, the council will not take a vote on either issue.
