  • ASHLAND — Cole Harding and Gus Simms won two events apiece and Taos Cadarette-Stewart added a first- and second-place finish to power the Ashland High boys swim team past Henley, Phoenix and Cascade Christian in a nonleague four-way Wednesday at the Southern Oregon University pool.
Henley edged both Phoenix and Ashland in the girls team race, with Cascade Christian phenom Breanna Sapienza recording two more victories.
Harding, a sophomore, prevailed in both the 50-yard freestyle (23.58 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (51.94), while Simms, a senior, touched first in the 100 butterfly (53.34) and 500 freestyle (5:13.28).
Cadarette-Stewart, a junior, won the 200 individual medley in 2:29.32 and placed a distant second behind Simms in the 500 freestyle (6:03.12), while also swimming a leg for Ashland's victorious 200 medley relay team.
Harding, Simms and Cadarette-Stewart, along with Alex Sukles, also delivered a victory for Ashland in the 200 freestyle relay, as the Grizzlies racked up 142 points to more than double runner-up Phoenix (60) in the team race.
In girls action, Sapienza, a junior, won the 500 freestyle (24.93) and 100 breastroke (1:08.66).
The Phoenix girls won all three relays, including an impressive victory by the 200 freestyle relay team. In that race, Kylee Burks, Olivia Sanchez, Lauren Speaks and Alyse Darnall clocked in at 1:46.84, less than a second off the winning time at last year's Class 4A state meet.
Also for the Pirates, Speaks broke Kelsey Nelson's 2003 school record in the 100 breastroke (1:14.42).
