Raiders' late push overtakes Menlo

ATHERTON, Calif. — Second-ranked Southern Oregon scored the final nine points to earn a 22-17 comeback victory over No. 19 Menlo in a Friday.

Southern Oregon improves to 10-3 in dual matches this season with the win. The Raiders will conclude a busy weekend in California today at the California Collegiate Open.

The Raiders trailed 17-13 going into the final two bouts, but No. 4-ranked Taylor Johnson and No. 12 Bubba Owens took care of business to clinch the win. Johnson pinned Menlo's Jason Chacon in 1:08 at 197 pounds, and Owens claimed a narrow 2-1 victory over Scott Brasilia in the heavyweight matchup.

Top-ranked Mitchell Lofstedt opened the match with a 9-2 win over No. 15 Drake Medieros at 125. Fourth-ranked Miguel Baltazar took on No. 2 Angel Garcia at 133 pounds, with Garcia claiming a 3-1 overtime victory.

Gustavo Lopez followed with a pin of the Raiders' Justin Eldred in 2:47 at 141. Second-ranked Jimmy Eggemeyer of SOU and 10th-ranked Dalton Urrutia tied it at 9-9 with identical 3-2 decisions the next two bouts.

Menlo's Eric Lopez knocked off Derek Mestrovich by a major decision at 165, and Eric Parsons' 10-2 major decision over No. 16 Tyler Thomas of the Raiders at 184 poised Menlo for a shot at the upset.

Top-ranked Brock Gutches earned a major decision over Joe Veloni, winning the 174-pound matchup 13-3 to help set the Raiders up for the late comeback.
