Burglar comes up empty-handed after breaking window

Female suspect finds no cash in Medford mini mart's registers

An attempted burglary was cut short early Wednesday when the burglar found no cash in the register drawers at the USA Petroleum Mini Mart, 2402 W. Main St., Medford, near Albertsons.

Surveillance footage shows a female suspect, in her 20s and about 5 feet 5 inches tall, smashing out a window in the convenience store with a rock at about 12:04 a.m. and going inside.

She then jumped over the checkout counter and yanked open both register drawers before slamming them to the ground. Both drawers were empty, so she fled.

Cameras don't give a clear picture of which direction she ran, police said.

"She was only in the business about 20 seconds or so," Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said.

The woman wore a black jacket with a hood, dark-colored pants, black shoes, a brown beanie, and a black-and-white checkered mask over her face, which left only her eyes exposed.

The woman does not appear to have been injured by broken glass, as no blood was found at the scene.

No merchandise was taken.

"The only issue was the damage to the window," Budreau said.

Police believe they may have a suspect, but officials declined to comment further.

Budreau added burglaries committed by females are rare.

"It is absolutely mostly males that are involved in this type of behavior," Budreau said. "For it to be a woman is unusual."
