  • CENTRAL POINT — North Medford's wrestlers produced in a big way Friday at the District 4 Regional Championships.
The Black Tornado placed 10 wrestlers into this morning's semifinals at Crater High and stand in second place overall in the eight-school field.
Defending state and regional champion Roseburg leads the pack with 160.5 points, with the Black Tornado at 130.5. Crater is third (117).
The Comets advanced nine wrestlers into the semifinals but took a major hit when third-ranked Morgan Walters at 126 was unable to compete because of a torn lateral collateral ligament. Walters, the 120-pound state champion last year, had hoped to give it a go but now is scheduled to have knee surgery in three weeks.
North Medford received a surprise boost when freshman Henry Cox (106), sophomore Skyler Black (195) and senior Jacob Kasper (220) advanced to the semifinals. Other Black Tornado wrestlers in the semis are Austin Mitchell (106), Cole Hornbrook (132), Wyatt Westfall (152), Reid Shipley (170), Trent Wilson (182), Kaden Johnson (182) and Avion Maloney (285).
Crater has a pair of wrestlers at 138 — sophomore Dillon Ulrey and freshman Tommy Winningham — in the semifinals. Additional Comets moving into the semis are Tyler Thomas (120), Nate Walters (132), Chase Mackey (160), Cavin Gillispie (170), Micah Walker (182), Jarrett Baker (220) and Derrick Turituri (285).
South Medford is tied for sixth with 44 points. Reaching the semifinal round for the Panthers were Anthony Neuenschwander (113), Luis Ayala (126), Ruben Mendez (145) and Brandon Brooks (152).
The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the Class 6A state tournament in two weeks at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
