Pirates place third, advance 11 in Skyline tournament

KLAMATH FALLS — Phoenix placed third in the Skyline Conference wrestling tournament at Mazama High and advanced 11 to next week's District 3 regional tournament.

Henley ran away with the title, crowning eight champions and advancing 19 to regionals. The Hornets scored 468.5 points, followed by Klamath Union (324.5) and Phoenix (217).

The top four in each weight class qualified for regionals next week at South Umpqua. The top four at regionals move on to state.

Phoenix had four in the finals Saturday, but none met with favorable results.

The Pirates' Izzy Rubio lost by a technical fall at 160 pounds, and teammates Austyn Snow (126), Kyle Bradfield (145) and Garrett Truax (170) all were defeated by falls.

Truax, an unseeded freshman, recorded a thrilling win in the semifinals when he pinned No. 2 seed Will Ruiz of Klamath Union in 3:27.

Phoenix got thirds from Ezequiel Flores (120) and Braden Vega (138) and fourths from Richard Orndorff (113), Knute Thompson (120), Trace Vega (152), Cory Raffensperger (195) and Jeremiah Meadors (285).

Hockey

NORTH MEDFORD 7, SOUTH MEDFORD 2 — North Medford captured the regular-season championship of the Southern Oregon League with the victory, earning a first-round bye in the playoffs.

South Medford opens the playoffs against Crater at 8 p.m. Monday at The RRRink. North Medford plays the winner the following night at 7 p.m.

Max Henry had two goals, and Dylan Wu, Michael Fthenakis, Erik Skogseth, Jeremy Wu and Kyler Westlund each knocked in one goal for the Black Tornado.

Jeremy Wu had four assists and Dylan Wu two assists.

Cy Jenson and Preston Carney both netted a goal for the Panthers.

North goalkeeper Calvinn Casaday made 22 saves.


Nordic Skiing

GUY MATTIODA MEMORIAL — At Winema National Forest, Ashland's Clara Honsinger placed second in the 5-kilometer race to finish third in the final Southern League standings at the Walt Haring Sno Park.

Honsinger crossed the finish line in 21 minutes, 5 seconds to lead the Ashland girls to a fourth-place team finish. The Grizz girls tied for third in the final league standings. South Eugene's Phacelia Cramer claimed the Southern League title with 292 points, 18 more than Honsinger.

In the boys race, Ashland's Gavan Borgias led the Grizzlies by placing 20th in 21:38, while Bohdan Schurr was 27th (24:18) and Nathan Ostovar 28th (24:22).

The Grizz boys finished third in the team race and fifth in the final league standings.
